چکیده

Detection and determination of ice and snow characteristics using remote sensing data is a new method in obtaining hydrology parameters. In order to determine these characteristics the numbers of meteorological stations are not enough in the glacier and mountain regions. We suggest using remotely sensing data for removing these deficiencies. Snow is distinguished more than other objects in the land by its different reflectance. But snow and clouds have similar reflectance, therefore MIR bands are used to distinguish them. In this paper , the methods of extraction snow cover area, new snow, compressed snow from optical images are described. In this study we use Landsat and IRS_LISS (III) images.

Measuring Snow and Glacier Ice Properties from Satellite

Satellite remote sensing is a convenient tool for studying snow and glacier ice, allowing us to conduct research over large and otherwise inaccessible areas. This paper reviews various methods for measuring snow and glacier ice properties with satellite remote sensing. These methods have been improving with the use of new satellite sensors, like the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) during the las...

Snow and glacier investigations using hyperspectral data in the Himalaya

This article presents highlights of the research work done in hyperspectral remote sensing in the Himalayan cryosphere. Hyperspectral radiometric investigations conducted at different field locations of NW Himalaya and cold laboratory are discussed. Spectral signatures were collected for varying snow grain size, contamination, liquid water content, vegetation/soilmixed snow, glacier ice, morain...

Hypsometrical Change of Gangotri Glacier since 1968 using Multitemporal DEM's

Precise estimate of glaciers, directly or indirectly influence most of the glaciological studies like ice extent, terminus position, mass balance studies, etc, thus mapping of snow and ice covered areas have continuously been one of the foremost scientific goals. Difficult access and unpredictable atmospheric condition that characterize the glacier areas have created remote sensing the foremost...

Glacier Remote Sensing Using Sentinel-2. Part II: Mapping Glacier Extents and Surface Facies, and Comparison to Landsat 8

Mapping of glacier extents from automated classification of optical satellite images has become a major application of the freely available images from Landsat. A widely applied method is based on segmented ratio images from a red and shortwave infrared band. With the now available data from Sentinel-2 (S2) and Landsat 8 (L8) there is high potential to further extend the existing time series (s...

An Automated Approach for Mapping Persistent Ice and Snow Cover over High Latitude Regions

We developed an automated approach for mapping persistent ice and snow cover (glaciers and perennial snowfields) from Landsat TM and ETM+ data across a variety of topography, glacier types, and climatic conditions at high latitudes (above ~65 ̋N). Our approach exploits all available Landsat scenes acquired during the late summer (1 August–15 September) over a multi-year period and employs an aut...
